International Student Advising/ Liaison Coordinator - 990515 ...

Basic Function:
Provide advising, counseling and administrative / liaison services related to student success between the College of Communication and Information (CCI), Chinese partner institutions and other future international partner institutions, the KSU China office, and the KSU Office of Global Education (OGE). Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with various KSU college international directors. Reports to the Director, School of Communication Studies.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Provide a variety of Advising / Counseling duties, including but not limited to the following:
Meet informational needs of prospective international students

Ensure student awareness of academic responsibilities

Provide direct advising to ensure that students stay on track

Track and evaluate individual student progress with early identification of academic problems; act as liaison with student's faculty advisor as needed
Promote acclimation to KSU

Provide ongoing meaningful information for students in an unfamiliar linguistic environment

Foster students' participation in School, College, campus, and community activities

Provide language support during the transition to graduate school

Increase CCI faculty understanding of international students' needs and requirements

Provide a variety of liaison roles:
Strengthen relationships between CCI and current Chinese partners (specifically working with relevant departmental personnel and Chinese university international offices; work directly with KSU's Office of Global Education and China office, and nurture and build future collaborations and relationships with prospective students

Build greater familiarity with the graduate school application process through direct interpersonal communication with Chinese partner institutions and prospective students

Work with KSU China office to expand CCI presence with departments that would not necessarily consider our programs (e.g. business, modern languages)

Assist CCI in developing strategies to improve and enhance services to international students

Assist with coordination of faculty exchanges and assist in broadening study abroad opportunities for Chinese undergraduates at KSU (CCI) and for CCI students at Chinese partner universities

Collaborate with colleagues across campus in providing services and advocacy for international students

Support and assist the coordination of a variety of student activities

including: orientation, excursions and cultural programs

Coordinate with the CCI budget office in handling budget matters related to international recruitment; tuition exchanges; curriculum development; student intercultural development; international student and faculty exchanges; and related matters

Perform related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Other Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field and two years of experience in education or student-related services to include experience working with and interacting with diverse, international, multicultural populations is required. Prefer Master's degree in related field and experience in Higher Education. Also prefer foreign study abroad or comparable international experience, and fluency in a foreign language.

Knowledge Of:
Student success principles; advising/counseling; global education
Working knowledge of desktop software (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite); web-based systems

Skill In:
Written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills ? including the ability to relate to international visitors according to their culture
Organizing information and projects
Adhering to deadlines
Work independently and effectively in collaborative groups

Ability To:
Work collaboratively with university departments and academic units
Organize and prioritize work with a high degree of self-initiative and independence
Analyze and perform in-depth research on complex international / multi-cultural issues
Work independently and as part of a team
Possess considerable attention to detail, a high level of quality control, and maintain a high customer-focus with contacts
Assimilate and maintain confidential data
Multi-task while managing multiple projects and assignments to meet deadlines within budget

Additional Information
(Unique characteristics or needs of the position):
Must pass a security check.

Bachelor's degree required, Master's preferred.

Also prefer foreign study abroad or comparable international experience, and fluency in a foreign language.
