Military suicides show signs of spreading in families

Erin Trieb for NBC News

Monica Velez, pictured in Austin, Texas, had two brothers, Jose "Freddy" Velez and Andrew Velez, both of whom served the U.S. military and both are now dead -- Freddy was killed in action in Iraq, and Andrew took his own life.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Before Army Spc. Andrew Velez left Texas for the final time, he asked his fragile sister to write him a promise ? a vow he could carry with him to Afghanistan.

Monica Velez knew she owed him that much. In the horrid weeks after each had lost their beloved brother, Freddy Velez, to enemy fire in Iraq, Monica tried to end her life with pills and alcohol. Now, she put pen to paper: ?I will not hurt myself. I will not do anything crazy. I know that Andrew loves me. I know that Freddy loved me.? Andrew folded her note and slipped it into his pocket.

?Don?t break your word to me,? he told her before heading back to war.

Seven months later, Andrew, 22, sat alone in an Army office at a base in Afghanistan. He put a gun to his head and committed suicide. Back in Texas, word reached Monica Velez who, once again, found herself in a dangerous place. Only now, she was alone. Days of alcohol and anti-depressants. Nights of dark thoughts: ?It would just be better if I was gone.?

'The storm' is coming
As the U.S. military suicide rate soared to record heights?during 2012, the families of service members say they, too, are witnessing a silent wave of self-harm occurring within their civilian ranks: spouses, children, parents and siblings.?

Some suicides and suicide attempts ? like those that ravaged the Velez family???are spurred by combat losses.

Others?may be?triggered by exhaustion and despair: As some veterans return debilitated by anxiety, many spouses realize it's now up to them???and will be for decades???to hold the family together.

Specific figures are lacking as no agency tracks civilian suicides within military families.

However, Kristina Kaufmann, a long-time Army wife, knows of three other Army wives, all friends, who took their lives in recent years.

Courtesy Kristina Kaufmann

"When you know that you are the anchor ? and if you go down, the family's going down ? the problem is that you can only do that for so long," said Kristina Kaufmann.

One was Faye Vick, described by Kaufmann as ?the perfect picture of an Army wife???pretty, nice, always with a smile.? Vick and her family lived around the corner from Kaufmann and near Fort Bragg, N.C. In 2006, when Kaufmann?s husband was in Afghanistan and Vick?s husband was deployed overseas, the 39-year-old mother placed herself, her infant and her 2-year-old son in a car inside a closed garage and started the engine, asphyxiating all three with carbon monoxide, according to Kaufmann and to local news reports at the time.

?And I know of too many others through the grapevine,? said Kaufmann, executive director of Code of Support, an Alexandria, Va.-based nonprofit that seeks to bridge the gap between civilians and military America.

?When you know that you are the anchor???and if you go down, the family?s going down???the problem is that you can only do that for so long,? said Kaufmann. ?That population (of spouses) is at the most risk. Because the storm is going to happen when everybody comes home. That?s where we are, unfortunately, going to see an uptick in lots of negative outcomes, including suicide, including suicide among the spouses.?

On Jan. 14, Department of Defense officials acknowledged that during 2012, service members committed suicide at a record pace as more than 349 people took their own lives across the four branches.?The military suicide rate is slightly lower than that of the general public. However, one active-duty member died by suicide every 25 hours last year.?

The Army sustained the heaviest branch toll at 182 suicides, which ??as NBC News reported Jan. 3?? meant that soldier suicides outpaced combat deaths for the first time, according to Pentagon officials.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta informed Congress last July that American armed forces are in the grip of a suicide "epidemic."?

One of the darkest undercurrents of the glaring statistics is that one suicide in a family boosts future suicide risks for everyone else inside the home.?They can be contagious, say experts like Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, a psychologist in the Washington, D.C., area and the founder of Give an Hour, which develops networks of mental-health volunteers who respond to both acute and chronic situations.

Numerous researchers have explored the so-called contagion effect of suicides within families and ?there?s no question the data supports there?s at least a doubling of risk,? among surviving family members, said Dr. Alan L. Berman, Ph.D., executive director of the American Association of Suicidology. The organization strives to better understand and prevent suicide.

?It?s understood that risk, in part, is biological,"?Berman said, given that disorders like depression have a genetic component.?

?But it?s also based on social modeling behavior: The suicide of a parent presents a model (for children in that family) of how to deal with problems, and that?s no less true for a spouse.?

Added Van Dahlen: "The closer that family member is to you, the greater risk you?re at. We believe, psychologically, it opens the possibility and ends a taboo."

?The thousands of service members who have killed themselves,? she added, ?they leave in their wake thousands of family members who are now at risk for that same kind of decision."

'I completely lost myself'
The cascade of Velez family tragedies began with pure valor.

On Nov. 13, 2004, Army Cpl. Jose ?Freddy? Velez, 23, sprayed bullets at insurgent forces???covering fire to allow other U.S. soldiers time to retreat from an enemy strong point in Fallujah, Iraq. After his ammo ran dry, Freddy Velez was shot and killed. The Army awarded him the Bronze Star and Silver Star.

"There are days I'm still overwhelmed. And if I sit and think about it, I feel like I wouldn't have to live through all this pain if I just let myself go," said Monica Velez, who shared family photos of brothers Freddy and Andrew.

Andrew, then serving with another unit in Iraq, told Monica of escorting his brother?s body home to Lubbock, Texas ? a job, he said, that required unzipping his brother?s body bag at every stop to re-verify Freddy?s identity.

During the trip, Andrew called his sister repeatedly while en route home and screamed into the phone for nearly two consecutive hours, ?like somebody was killing him,? she said.

?There was nothing I could do,? Monica Velez recalled. ?The operator kept cutting in (to request additional payment for the call) and I just said, ?Add it to my credit card.? He just wailed. That travel home, I think is what eventually broke him.?

Weeks later, Monica broke.

She doesn?t know how close she came to death the first time she tried to end her life. She never was told how slow her pulse became that night. She just remembers regaining consciousness at a hospital in Killeen, Texas???home to Fort Hood, where Freddy was based. She awoke with an IV plugged into her arm. A doctor handed her a list of local psychiatrists then discharged her.

Velez tried, she said, to seek help for her deepening depression but was told that her health insurance would not cover counseling.

Her grief was rooted in a difficult childhood, she said, that forged "tighter than tight" emotional bonds between Velez and her two brothers, turning the siblings into a mutual support group.

?When Freddy passed away, I went through a really hard depression,? she said. ?I went to the emergency room for anxiety attacks. I couldn?t breathe. But nobody knew how to deal with me so they just gave me Ativan (an anti-anxiety drug) and Hydrocodone (a pain killer).

?I started drinking heavily and taking the prescriptions. And one day, I just felt it would be better off if I wasn?t around and decided to take all of the pills. Grief can bring you to that breaking moment.?

Soon after, in February 2005, Andrew sent his older sister (then 25) an email: ?We need to be stronger. We need to protect each other.?

Though he was the youngest of the siblings, Andrew always was ?the strong one,? his sister said. ?But he and Freddy were inseparable.? Near the end of 2005, Andrew told his sister he was redeploying to Afghanistan because, she said, ?I think he felt closer to Freddy there.?

From March through July of 2006, the two swapped calls and emails. In Afghanistan, Andrew grew increasingly despondent, she said, over the unraveling of his marriage and family in Lubbock. He had three children. But he worried, too, about his sister?s state of mind.

?We could both hear it in each other?s voices. He was scared I was going to do something. I was scared he was going to do something.?

He did. Andrew?s suicide on July 25, 2006, drove Monica, at first, into 20-hour workdays at a domestic violence shelter. She wasn?t sleeping or eating. Eventually, she was drinking again, ?from the morning until I passed out,? she said. ?Then, doing it again the next day.

?I completely lost myself. I resigned my job. I stopped paying my bills. I got evicted. I was prescribed anti-depressants. I noticed taking the pills and drinking got me out of the emotions. So I found myself in a dangerous place very quickly.

?Again???several trips to the ER (for overdoses). I?m not sure why I wasn?t ever held there. In my down periods, I would tell myself it would just be better off if I was gone.?

In 2008, a friend at Fort Hood, Texas, connected Velez with the Tragedy Assistance Program For Survivors (TAPS), a resource for anyone who suffers the loss of a military loved one.

?That was the first time anybody had offered to help me with the depression and the grief.? she said.

'Family units breaking down'
Kaufmann, who lost three Army-spouse friends to suicide, argues that military-family suicides should be tracked and researched by the Department of Defense to help mental-health experts begin to slow or stop the problem. She knows, however, such an accounting is not likely.?

?I get the sense that people in the military think that by including families into this kind of discussion ? particularly when you?re talking about the (broader) mental-health impacts on family members ? they look at that as something that will only add to the problem. Whereas, we believe that it would prove to be a solution,? Kauffman said.

?We?ve approached this very myopically. More than half of soldiers are married. Soldiers come with families. And the military has a maddening way of both dismissing families and holding them accountable at the same time. It?s frustrating for us, not only when we?re trying to get our husbands help, but also when you have the family units breaking down,? she added.?

NBC News requested to speak with officials at the newly formed Department of Defense suicide-prevention office about the issue of suicides within military families and whether tracking is needed. A DOD spokeswoman said, however, that the office is only working to address active-duty suicides. The interview request was not granted.

Van Dahlen, meanwhile, believes that asking DOD to track military families is an unreasonable expectation to place on the agency when it already is facing budget cuts.

Even if the DOD wants to ? and many of my colleagues there desperately would want to devote resources to this???those resources are not going to be there,? she said. Rather than putting "the screws to DOD" and doing "even more with even less," Van Dahlen believes public-private partnerships should be encouraged "to figure out how we can (address) this together."

'Like an airborne disease'
More than eight years after Freddy?s combat death, and more than six years removed from Andrew?s suicide, Monica Velez annually runs the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., in honor of her fallen brothers.

Matt Slocum / AP file

Monica Velez cleans her brother's name, engraved in a memorial at Fort Hood, Texas.

But, now living in Austin, she acknowledges she still struggles with what she calls, ?those thoughts.?

?There are days I?m still overwhelmed. And if I sit and think about it, I feel like I wouldn?t have to live through all this pain if I just let myself go. It doesn?t just go away. But you learn how to cope. You learn better coping skills,? she said, adding she gained those tools from TAPS.

Army officers at Fort Hood have occasionally asked her, she said, for ideas to help them prevent the rising military suicide rate. She watches that tally, too.

?The numbers take my breath away. I know it can be overwhelming for the Army generals on the other end of the table trying to figure this problem out. Because it?s like an airborne disease going through the building and you?re trying to figure out how to stop it before it gets to you," she said.?

?But it?s coming at a really fast rate, and it?s inevitable.?

Qigong improves quality of life for breast cancer patients, study suggests

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Researchers from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have found qigong, an ancient mind-body practice, reduces depressive symptoms and improves quality of life in women undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer.

The study, published in the journal Cancer, is the first to examine qigong in patients actively receiving radiation therapy and include a follow-up period to assess benefits over time. Even though individual mind-body practices such as meditation and guided imagery appear to reduce aspects of distress and improve quality of life, questions remain about their effectiveness when conducted in conjunction with radiation therapy.

"We were also particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment," said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., professor in MD Anderson's Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science and director of the Integrative Medicine Program. "It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles."

For the trial, Cohen, the corresponding author, and his colleagues enrolled 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China. Forty-nine patients were randomized to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy, while 47 women comprised a waitlist control group receiving the standard of care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong consisting of synchronizing one's breath with various exercises. As a practice, qigong dates back more than 4,000 years when it was used across Asia to support spiritual health and prevent disease.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances and overall quality of life.

Results show benefits emerged over time

Patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time.

The study also found qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

"We examined women's depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more," Cohen said. "In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group."

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden, or expedite the recovery process especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy.

Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of these modalities, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

Future research needed

The authors note several limitations to the study, including the absence of an active control group making it difficult to rule out whether or not the effects of qigong were influenced by a patient's expectations or simply being a light exercise. Additionally, the homogeneity of the group, Chinese women at a single site, limits the ability of applying the results to other populations.

According to the authors, the findings support other previously reported trials examining qigong benefits, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations. Additional work is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of disease.

Germicidal Lights improve air quality for a healthier home | Empire ...

Empire Heating & Air Conditioning is now offering?30% OFF?your Germicidal Lights installation. ?Hurry offer ends February 28, 2013!

The air inside your home can be much worse than the air outside your home. In fact, studies have shown that this is most likely the case in the average American home. Greater home sealing and better insulation is a great idea to save energy costs, but it can also be creating poor indoor air.

Your home?s indoor air can contain mold, mildew, skin dander, dust, pet contaminants, pollen and more. How do you sanitize your home?s indoor air? One way is through the use of germicidal lights.

Germicidal lights emit a light wave spectrum in the ultra violet range. The ultra violet light waves penetrate the outer membrane of microscopic living organisms such as mold, mildew, viruses and more. As the light enters the organism, it destroys its DNA structure and it is killed. These lights use the same technology that hospitals use to sanitize air. The germicidal lights work 24 hours a day sanitizing your homes indoor air as it passes through the light spectrum.

The use of germicidal lights on indoor air helps stop the spread of cold and flu germs and kills mold and bacteria growth. Sanitizing the air from contaminants is helpful for everyone but it is critical to infants, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system.

Germicidal light technology offers a very affordable and effective solution to sanitize all the air in your home or business. To speak with someone about the benefits of these UV lights, call Empire Heating & Air Conditioning at 404-294-0900 and we provide you a no cost in home or business consultation to suggest a solution.

Robotic Satellite-Refueling Test Resumes on Space Station

An International Space Station experiment testing the ability of robots to repair and refuel orbiting satellites has resumed, after being stalled for a week by a software glitch.

NASA's Robotic Refueling Mission (RRM) resumed operations Tuesday (Jan. 22) after engineers finished analyzing loads and software limits for the space station's Dextre robot, agency officials announced in a Tuesday mission update.

RRM calls for Dextre, which sits at the end of the orbiting lab's huge Canadarm2 robotic arm, to perform simulated refueling and repair tasks on a washing-machine-size platform affixed to the station's exterior. The latest round of RRM experiments started Jan. 14 and was expected to last about 10 days, but a software glitch halted activities after just a day.

The RRM module, which consists of activity boards and tools necessary to demonstrate on-orbit refueling, launched to the station in July 2011 aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which was making the last flight in the shuttle program's 30-year history.

The experiment's goal is to demonstrate technology that could someday fix and refuel orbiting satellites robotically, thereby extending their lives and potentially saving satellite operators billions of dollars over the long haul. Such work can be challenging, since current satellites were generally not designed to be serviced.

The first RRM experiments began last year, when controllers on the ground used the two-armed Dextre to snip some wires with minimal clearance. The latest round of activities will be more complex and involved, as Dextre will snip more wires, unscrew caps and pump simulated fuel, NASA officials have said.

American gets 35 years for role in Mumbai attacks

A federal judge in Chicago sentenced an American citizen to 35 years in prison on Thursday for his role in providing surveillance information and videos laying the groundwork for the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, India, that left more than 160 dead and hundreds wounded.

David Coleman Headley, a US citizen of Pakistani heritage, was arrested in October 2009. He agreed shortly afterward to cooperate with US investigators and intelligence officials, and he testified against one of his fellow co-conspirators.

Among other information, Mr. Headley told US officials of a link between the terror operation in India and Pakistan?s intelligence service, the ISI. He identified his ISI contact as ?Major Iqbal,? according to court documents.

RECOMMENDED: Quiz: How much do you know about terrorism?

?Major Iqbal? helped plan and fund the Mumbai attacks, he said.

In light of his cooperation, prosecutors did not seek the death penalty for Headley. In addition, instead of a life sentence, prosecutors urged US District Judge Harry Leinenweber to impose a 30 to 35-year prison term.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Leinenweber called Headley a ?terrorist? and rejected suggestions he had reformed his life.

?I don?t have any faith in Mr. Headley when he says he?s a changed person and believes in the American way of life,? the judge said, according to the Associated Press.

In their sentencing memorandum, prosecutors acknowledged that Headley played ?an essential role in the planning of a horrific terrorist attack.?

?There is little question that life imprisonment would be an appropriate punishment for Headley?s incredibly serious crimes,? they said. But they added that his extensive cooperation had been of ?significant value? to US anti-terror efforts.

Headley, 52, is unlikely to emerge from prison until he is well into his 80s.

Headley pleaded guilty in March 2010 to all 12 counts in his indictment. The charges included conspiracy to bomb public places in India, conspiracy to murder and maim persons in India, and six counts of aiding and abetting the murder of US citizens in India.

Among the dead were six American citizens.

Headley attended a series of training camps in Pakistan in 2002 and 2003. He later decided to change his name from Daood Gilani to David Headley to allow him to conceal his Pakistani ties and portray himself as an American in India.

Headley told investigators that he made five trips to Mumbai in 2006, 2007, and 2008 to survey and videotape potential targets for a planned assault team from the Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

At one point he used a GPS device to pinpoint potential landing spots for the assault team along the shores of Mumbai harbor.

The attacks were carried out from Nov. 26 to Nov. 28, 2009 by 10 men trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba. They were armed with assault rifles, grenades, and improvised explosive devices, and they killed indiscriminately.

Targets included the Taj Mahal Hotel, Oberoi Hotel, the Leopold Caf?, a Jewish center called the Chabad House, and the train station. Headley had provided surveillance of each of those targets.

Four months after the attacks, Headley returned to India to conduct surveillance of India?s National Defense College in Delhi and Chabad Houses in several other cities, officials said.

Headley was also asked to provide surveillance in advance of planned attacks on the Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-Posten, which had published a controversial cartoon depicting the Prophet Mohammed in a derogatory light. The action prompted calls from Islamic militants ? including members of Al Qaeda ? for retaliation.

Headley traveled to Denmark in January 2009 and produced videos that he turned over to a Lashkar member later that month during a trip to Pakistan. He returned to Europe in July and August 2009 and produced 13 additional surveillance videos in Denmark.

Headley was arrested at Chicago?s O?Hare International Airport in Oct. 2009 while preparing to board a flight to Pakistan to deliver the 13 videos.

As part of his cooperation he testified at the June 2011 trial of alleged co-conspirator Tahawwur Rana of Chicago. Mr. Rana was convicted of providing material support to the Denmark plot and providing material support to Lashkar.

He was sentenced last week to 14 years in prison.

Prenatal inflammation linked to autism risk

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Maternal inflammation during early pregnancy may be related to an increased risk of autism in children, according to new findings supported by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health. Researchers found this in children of mothers with elevated C-reactive protein (CRP), a well-established marker of systemic inflammation.

The risk of autism among children in the study was increased by 43 percent among mothers with CRP levels in the top 20th percentile, and by 80 percent for maternal CRP in the top 10th percentile. The findings appear in the journal Molecular Psychiatry and add to mounting evidence that an overactive immune response can alter the development of the central nervous system in the fetus.

"Elevated CRP is a signal that the body is undergoing a response to inflammation from, for example, a viral or bacterial infection," said lead scientist on the study, Alan Brown, M.D., professor of clinical psychiatry and epidemiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York State Psychiatric Institute, and Mailman School of Public Health. "The higher the level of CRP in the mother, the greater the risk of autism in the child."

Brown cautioned that the results should be viewed in perspective since the prevalence of inflammation during pregnancy is substantially higher than the prevalence of autism.

"The vast majority of mothers with increased CRP levels will not give birth to children with autism," Brown said. "We don't know enough yet to suggest routine testing of pregnant mothers for CRP for this reason alone; however, exercising precautionary measures to prevent infections during pregnancy may be of considerable value."

"The brain develops rapidly throughout pregnancy," said Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., director of NIEHS, which funds a broad portfolio of autism and neurodevelopmental-related research. "This has important implications for understanding how the environment and our genes interact to cause autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders."

The study capitalized on a unique national birth cohort known as the Finnish Maternity Cohort (FMC), which contains an archive of samples collected from pregnant women in Finland, where a component of whole blood, referred to as serum, is systematically collected during the early part of pregnancy. The FMC consists of 1.6 million specimens from about 810,000 women, archived in a single, centralized biorepository. Finland also maintains diagnoses of virtually all childhood autism cases from national registries of both hospital admissions and outpatient treatment.

From this large national sample, the researchers analyzed CRP in archived maternal serum corresponding to 677 childhood autism cases and an equal number of matched controls. The findings were not explained by maternal age, paternal age, gender, previous births, socioeconomic status, preterm birth, or birth weight. The work was conducted in collaboration with investigators in Finland, including the University of Turku and the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Oulu and Helsinki.

"Studying autism can be challenging, because symptoms may not be apparent in children until certain brain functions, such as language, come on line," said Cindy Lawler, Ph.D., head of the NIEHS Cellular, Organ, and Systems Pathobiology Branch and program lead for the Institute's extramural portfolio of autism research. "This study is remarkable, because it uses biomarker data to give us a glimpse back to a critical time in early pregnancy."

This work is expected to stimulate further research on autism, which is complex and challenging to identify causes. Future studies may help define how infections, other inflammatory insults, and the body's immune response interact with genes to elevate the risk for autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Preventative approaches addressing environmental causes of autism may also benefit from additional research.

The study was funded primarily by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant from NIEHS, with additional support from the National Institute of Mental Health.

HTC One SV (Cricket Wireless)

Cricket's 4G LTE network is finally here, and not a moment too soon. Without speedy LTE, Cricket smartphones were stuck in the slow lane. But now that it's in 18 Cricket markets (and more coming), you should be picking up an LTE smartphone if you're interested in Web browsing or streaming on the go.

The HTC One SV is the middle entry in Cricket's current lineup of three LTE phones. On top, there's the uncompromising Samsung Galaxy S III ($479.99). Below, there's the LG Optimus Regard ($229.99), which MetroPCS sells as the LG Motion 4G. The One SV looks like a happy medium to me: a well-built, lively phone with competitive performance that fits well in a range of hand sizes.

Physical Design and Call Quality
HTC makes really nice phones. The company's materials design is the best in the business; it's better than Samsung. The One SV is no exception. The phone has a black front with red touch buttons, and the back is a great-looking red-orange polycarbonate. The edges are slightly slanted, giving the phone a little bit more personality than more generic smartphones. At 5 x 2.6 x 0.36 inches (HWD) and 4.3 ounces, it's the right size and shape for most hands.

The phone has a 4.3-inch, 800-by-480 Super LCD2 screen that really pops. I've seen higher resolutions on high-end phones (such as the HTC 8X's 4.3-inch, 720p panel) but the screen quality and viewing angle are both very good here. The screen size and resolution fit neatly between the Galaxy S III's 4.8-inch, 720p panel and the Optimus Regard's little 3.5-inch, 480-by-320 display.

Call quality is good but not great, as the earpiece can be a bit quiet for noisy locations. There's no in-ear feedback of your own voice. Transmissions sound very good on the other end, with solid noise cancellation and well-tuned voices. The back-ported speakerphone is of decent volume, if a bit tinny. I had no trouble connecting the One SV to a Bluetooth headset and using it with the standard Android 4.0 voice dialing. Battery life, at 9 hours, 4 minutes of talk time, was solid.

Internet Access, Browsing, and Apps
Cricket's new LTE service is available in 18 metro areas including Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Philadelphia. The carrier aims to bring LTE to the rest of its coverage area this year, but for now, other Cricket users are still plugging along on 3G.

The LTE network uses narrow channel sizes, so it won't show the spectacular peak speeds we've seen with AT&T and Verizon. But in tests in Las Vegas in January, it zipped along with download speeds between 5-8Mbps and uploads between 2-5Mbps.

Cricket's 3G speeds elsewhere are similar to Sprint's; where it doesn't have coverage itself, it uses Sprint's network. Here in Manhattan, I got a pleasantly surprising 800-900kbps down, which is better than I've seen recently on Sprint's network on other devices.

The phone also has both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. I had some problems with the phone occasionally dropping Wi-Fi connections, though I couldn't reproduce the effect reliably.

The One SV runs Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with HTC's Sense overlay. There's no word on any 4.1 "Jelly Bean" updates, so don't count on them. ICS is the most popular version of Android at the moment, so the One SV should run everything in the Android Market. Cricket adds a few bloatware apps; there's nothing obnoxious, and Cricket's $5/month Cricket Navigator driving app could actually prove useful.

Helpful Advice On Running A Home Based Business | Kenny's MLM ...

TIP! Do you want to specialize in selling used books? Many sites allow you to sell used books. More than one are probably going to be needed.

It seems like everyone is wanting to run a business from home, but most people aren?t sure what they need to do to get started. If you fall into that category and don?t know where to start, you have come to the right place. This article is here to help you operate and manage your online business.

TIP! One helpful tip for working at home is to have a set schedule, beginning with the time you wake up and get ready for work, just as if you were commuting to an office. If you look professional, you will have the proper frame of mind for work.

Choose your new home based business based on something you have expertize and experience in. Learning takes time, and it would be wise to do something you already know. While this is theoretically possible, it will be much easier to be successful if you already have some experience in the field you choose. Write down your interests and think of businesses that fit these interests. This is a sensible approach.

TIP! A steady supply of sticky notes is a serious tool for success. They can be used for many different reasons, such as reminders for yourself or paperwork.

It?s important to have a plan in case your work from home business has issues. Have plans for things like issues with your web host and missing product shipments. You will be able to sustain your income as you recover from these catastrophes.

TIP! Build a business plan before spending a cent on your new business. Create a plan and talk to a consultant about looking at it before you start.

Check your state and local laws on setting up a DBA (doing business as) for your company. You can often do this at your bank or you can ask the Chamber of Commerce. It?s not very costly and you can separate your business and personal accounts.

TIP! You should really have separate business and home phone lines. Having a separate line allows you to answer incoming calls in a professional manner, so that kids, pets and other background noise are not evident in the background.

You have to network and market your business constantly. Maybe you can bring up your business in a relevant conversation. As well, carry business cards at all time, and give them out when the time is right.

TIP! Know you potential customers, and use this information to reach them. This is a crucial procedure of a home business since less advertising resources are available.

Driving can be written off if it?s for business. These expenses are 100% deductible when you do your taxes. Be careful to also document that the entire time spent driving is essential to your business.

TIP! You need to make sure customers know where to go in order to purchase your products. If your products are available in stores, tell your customers what those stores are.

When you are setting up a work schedule, make sure that you take into account your productive times during the day. Even though you will work from home, you still must perform your client?s job and keep them in mind.

TIP! Feel free to have breaks during the day, but make sure you dedicate a chunk of your time to just work related things and don?t let the activities in your household distract you. Don?t start long home improvement projects or talk on the phone for long periods of time.

Home businesses are often not limited to a standard work day, but you should set limits so you are not working 24/7. Take personal time for your family and friends so that you can decompress and relax. If you are running 24 hours, seven days a week, you?ll find that you burn out and break down, just like a car. Work when you?re supposed to work, and don?t do any overtime unless you really must. After all is said and done, then be sure to relax!

TIP! Create your work schedule. Not having a set schedule will cause you to work around the clock.

Don?t expect to be able to run a business with no operating costs. There are many free resources you can use, but the best classes and tutorials might require you to pay a small fee. If you try to run a business completely without ever buying the higher-end tools to help you, then you won?t be as successful.

TIP! Make sure to take advantage of the plethora of information on the web. Keep track of your competition if you want to stay at the head of the class.

Hopefully, this article has given you some ideas about starting your home based business. Running your own business can be one of the most rewarding adventures of your life. Just be aware that this information is only helpful if you take advantage of it and actually use it! Make an effort do that, and your business will be successful.

30,000 Iranian spies? Library of Congress withdraws report

A US Library of Congress report asserting that Iran's Intelligence agency has 30,000 employees has been widely quoted ? and criticized. The report has been withdrawn and is now under revision.

By Justin Elliott,?ProPublica / January 22, 2013

An official with the Library of Congress says a widely cited but poorly sourced report his office did on Iran's intelligence ministry has been pulled from circulation.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

As we detailed last week, the study's ill-supported claim that the Iranian intelligence ministry has 30,000 employees was picked up by CNN and others. News outlets have also seized on other assertions in the report.

The report, which was produced on behalf of a Pentagon office, had been posted on a non-public government-only website. It was leaked earlier this month.

"The report was pulled for revisions after the Division staff identified a passage that should have been caveated but was missed in the initial reviews," said Federal Research Division chief David Osborne in an email. "The report will be re-posted when revised."

Osborne declined to specify the passage in question. It might have had nothing to do with the 30,000 figure.

Another section of the report prompted a married couple branded as spies for Iran to consider legal action.

The report flatly claims that a British woman and her Iranian-born husband are operatives for Iran's intelligence ministry. The husband, Massoud Khodabandeh, is a former-member-turned-fierce-critic of the Mujahadin-e Khalq (MEK), a small exile group that has long fought the government of Iran and was recently removed from the U.S. government's list of terrorist organizations.

The report even includes their pictures.

The report's source for the spy claim is a 2007 essay published on a now-defunct website by Rabbi Daniel Zucker, who is chair of a group called Americans for Democracy in the Middle East and has frequently written in support of the MEK.

The Zucker piece in turn cites a 2005 post on another now-defunct pro-MEK website called iranterror.com. That site also states Khodabandeh and his wife are operatives for Iranian intelligence, but does not offer any sources or evidence.

Even though it relied on questionable sourcing, the report effectively extended the imprimatur of the U.S. government to the claim that the couple are spies.

Asked about the various criticisms of the report, Pentagon spokeswoman Anne Edgecomb told ProPublica: "We believe its findings will enrich the discussions and concepts of policy makers."

She declined to comment further.

The MEK's official website seized on the government report this month, publishing an item claiming that "a recent investigative report by [the] Pentagon ... revealed that Anne and Massoud Khodabandeh are agents of the mullahs' Ministry of Intelligence and Security."

Khodabandeh and his wife, Anne, who also worked with the MEK in the 1980s and 90s, were incensed by the government report.

"Everything they've said is just made up," Anne Khodabandeh told ProPublica.

Massoud Khodabandeh wrote a response column on Huffington Post blasting the report for its reliance on pro-MEK sources. The couple, who are based in the United Kingdom, run an anti-MEK website and consider the group a dangerous cult. (That charge that has been echoed by some outside observers but rejected by the MEK.)

The study claims that after Khodabandeh left the MEK in 1996, he and Anne "agreed to work for [Iran's intelligence ministry] and spy on MEK." It claims that the intelligence ministry used threats against Khodabandeh's family in Tehran to compel the couple to cooperate.

Earlier this month, Anne Khodabandeh emailed Osborne, the Federal Research Division chief, saying that "my solicitor would like to know the actual provenance of the report for further action." Osborne responded that the report had been pulled down for (again unspecified) revisions.

"The fact that the document was leaked to [Washington Free Beacon reporter] Mr. Bill Gertz or otherwise publicized is not the fault of the Library of Congress," Osborne wrote Jan. 9. "It is not and will not be posted to any Library of Congress site."

Anne Khodabandeh told ProPublica she and her husband are holding off on legal action at this point because of the potential expense involved, and the fact that the report does not name its author.

Keys attends first Sundance as producer, composer

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? It's a busy week for Alicia Keys.

The singer-songwriter is set to perform at three events during Barack Obama's presidential inauguration on Monday. She'll sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl on Feb. 3. And meanwhile, she popped over to Park City, Utah, to debut her first film as executive producer and composer.

The 32-year-old entertainer is attending her first Sundance Film Festival to support "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete," which premiered Friday. Directed by George Tillman, Jr., the film tells the story of two young boys who survive the streets of Brooklyn on their own.

"It's great because I love being part of bringing stories that you wouldn't often hear to the world," she said. "The fact that it was in my hometown ? New York ? that felt really good. The most important thing for me is that it looked and was so authentic."

This was Keys' first experience creating a film score, and she found the process enlightening.

"I think it really expanded me because it's a beautiful collaborative process," she said. "Being able to collaborate with (director) George (Tillman, Jr.), and he has such a cool feeling about music and is specific about how it related to each scene, and that was really interesting. There were some pieces that came really naturally to me and others that I had to kind of think more of how does that feel, what should that feel like?"

While she's thrilled to experience her first Sundance festival, Keys confessed she's constantly thinking about her Super Bowl performance.

"I'm really excited about it, I can't even lie," she said with a smile. "I have to rehearse it totally, as if it's a brand new song, because it is actually a brand new song in the style that I'll deliver it. I'm actually rehearsing it like a maniac."

Radcliffe explores daring territory in new film

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? Daniel Radcliffe has really left Harry Potter behind with a startling and explicit Sundance Film Festival role as poet Allen Ginsberg.

"Kill Your Darlings" premiered Friday at Sundance and puts Radcliffe into daring territory.

His young Ginsberg is initiated into booze and drugs, has oral sex performed on him in a library, makes out with one man and gets naked for sex with another man.

The film recounts a little-known story of murder involving Ginsberg's circle of friends, including fellow future beat heroes Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs.

US representative calls for outlawing 3-D printed gun magazines

3 hrs.

U.S.?Representative?Steve Israel (D-Huntington, N.Y.) plans to propose a ban on creating gun magazines with 3-D printers. The bill is still in the drafting stage, but?Israel intends to make sure existing legislation includes consideration for this new kind of homemade?firearm.

Last month, Rep. Israel proposed to renew?the Undetectable Firearms Act, which was adopted in 1988 and will expire in December of this year. Israel suggested that the act, which requires all guns to be detectable by such devices as X-ray machines and metal detectors, is more relevant than ever.

The 112th Congress ended before the renewal could be considered, and Israel was preparing to resubmit it when some news on the 3-D printing front caused his organization to reconsider the legislation. Defense Distributed, a group attempting to create a fully 3-D printed gun, posted a video on YouTube showing a working printed 30-round magazine for an AR-15?assault rifle.

With the climate around gun legislation trending toward tighter restrictions, Israel's team decided that the Undetectable Firearms Act should be expanded to outlaw?3-D?printed magazines of any kind.

Samantha Slater, Israel's communications director, told NBC News that Israel is "supportive of 3-D printing," but that the potential for circumventing the law in this case is too great to ignore.

Gun-makers already offer polymer magazines that Slater confirmed would be more or less equivalent to any created in a home printer. She said that Israel is not targeting those companies, but is more "focused on the lone wolf" who might make one at home.

She did?not say how legislation could be crafted that would prohibit one but not the other; the proposal is being re-drafted in light of the new requirements, and the language isn't set down yet. They expect to be able to reintroduce the bill within a month or two.

It's worth noting that?the law would not ban any of the digital or physical apparatus necessary to create the magazines or firearms. Blueprints, files, printers and tutorials would not be addressed by the law, just the magazines and printed gun parts themselves.

Devin Coldewey is a contributing writer for NBCNews Digital. His personal website is?coldewey.cc.

Jim Kappelhoff was the oldest of four brothers and took charge when it came to organizing pickup games. They made a small hockey rink in the back yard of their St. Paul home, and Kappelhoff would organize neighborhood kids into tournament brackets when they went to the local city park. They would stay there all day playing sports, come home for dinner and then go back to the park.

?You could count on the fact that there were always enough kids to have a game of either baseball or football or hockey, and that was our entertainment,? Kappelhoff said. ?We didn?t have the video games then.?

His family moved to Anoka when he was in ninth grade. After he graduated from Anoka High School in 1972 he never lost his interest in organizing sporting events. It would become a significant part of his early career.

Kappelhoff is retiring Feb. 28 as Blaine?s park and recreation director after having served about six years in that role. Kappelhoff started working part-time as an adult athletics league director for Blaine in 1982. He became the full-time recreation supervisor in 1984 and held that title until longtime parks and recreation director Jim Peterson retired in 2007. He had been with the city for 34 years, including 23 years as the director.

Prior to Blaine, Kappelhoff was a program supervisor in Spring Lake Park?s park and recreation department in 1981 and the recreation programmer for the city of Fridley from 1977 to 1980. After he graduated from Anoka High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to get help paying his college tuition under the G.I. Bill. He received an associate of arts degree in recreation leadership in 1972 from North Hennepin Community College and a bachelor of science degree in recreation, parks and leisure studies from the University of Minnesota in 1982.

Mayor Tom Ryan said Kappelhoff and Peterson had the biggest impact on the growth of the Blaine parks program.

?He grew up with the whole program,? he said of Kappelhoff. ?He helped develop it a lot.?

Peterson said Kappelhoff handled the city?s adult athletics programs and was the liaison with youth athletics groups, which included scheduling field use.

Kappelhoff said he set up training programs for the adults volunteering to be coaches of the youth sports teams. He joined the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) and at one point served as a chapter director for this organization. He has served on the advisory committee for the NYSCA since 2002.

Kappelhoff?s father Jim Kappelhoff was Anoka?s park and recreation director from March 1975 through the end of 1979. His father would later become the director of the North Anoka County Emergency (NACE) Food Shelf in East Bethel for about 20 years.

The younger Kappelhoff was drawn to a career in parks and recreation because of his interest in sports and his father?s background. He would find out that the job was much more about sports, however.

?You have to have a passion and a vision about what?s in the future and try to meet that with the needs of the community,? Kappelhoff said.

Blaine has become a more diverse community. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, 84 percent of Blaine?s population is white, 7.8 percent Asian, 3.7 percent African American and 3.2 percent Hispanic or Latino. These are the four largest segments. In 2000, the percentages were 93.9 percent white, 2.5 percent Asian, 0.9 percent black and 1.7 percent Hispanic or Latino.

In celebration of the growing diversity, Kappelhoff started the Blaine World Fest in 2008 to bring together the different cultures through the sharing of foods, dances and arts.

Another key project for Kappelhoff was the Miracle League field at the Blaine Baseball Complex, which was renamed Harmon Killebrew Memorial Field last spring. Killebrew was behind the drive to develop fields in Minnesota that gives kids with disabilities the chance to enjoy the fun and camaraderie of team sports. He attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Blaine field in 2005 and the opening game in 2006.

Kappelhoff said in 2004 that Miracle League of Minnesota founder and executive director Kevin Thoresen came to city hall to pitch the idea of Blaine having the first Miracle League field in Minnesota.

The only thing Blaine had to do was donate the land, Kappelhoff said. The construction material and labor was paid for through donations by the Minnesota Twins Community Fund, the Carl and Eloise Pohlad Family Foundation and the Minnesota Utility Contractors Association.

?Of course with Harmon Killebrew on board with the Miracle League of Minnesota, it was a success right from the beginning,? Kappelhoff said.

He fondly remembers opening day on May 6, 2006 and seeing all the kids in their jerseys playing a ball game with a real pipe organ playing in the background and T.C. Bear interacting with the kids and crowd.

Lakeside Commons Park was probably the signature project during his time as Blaine?s park and recreation director, Kappelhoff said. Planning for the nearly $3 million project was challenging, but enjoyable. He worked with multiple city departments including finance, engineering and inspections as well as with various contractors to stay up to date on what was happening.

Lakeside Commons Park opened in 2010 and includes a beach, watercraft rental, beach house with changing rooms and restrooms, picnic shelter, trails and a large playground.

?Providing a facility like that which serves 50,000 people a summer to me is something that is meeting the needs of the community,? Kappelhoff said.

Over 350 people competed in the inaugural Blaine Triathlon at Lakeside Commons Park in May 2012. Registration is open for the second annual competition on May 18. Nate Monahan, program supervisor, oversees the Blaine Triathlon.

Deciding to retire

Peterson felt Kappelhoff was the strongest person to take over for him after he retired in 2007 because he had overall knowledge of the operation of the department.

?I was very proud he was able to fill my position,? Peterson said. ?I thought he would be there longer.?

Kappelhoff also thought he would be there longer, but he was eligible for retirement and decided to accept an offer from the city to retire in early 2013 as part of the city?s overall effort to reduce its budget.

Kappelhoff said his original plan was to stay on through the end of 2013 and see through planning of the 40-acre Lexington Avenue Athletic Park complex, finishing up Legacy Creek Park and replacing a field at Aquatore Park.

Kappelhoff is preparing other staff to take over his job responsibilities after he retires, so he has not really thought about March 1, he said.

Robert Therres, who has been with the city of Blaine since 2001 and is the public services manager, will also be taking on the title of interim parks and recreation director when Kappelhoff retires.

One of Therres? roles will be to evaluate current Blaine staff to see if anybody is a candidate to become the next parks and recreation director.
